Visual Patient Record

Using the visual patient record solution, clinicians get a single coherent overview of a patient's medical history and the tools to navigate, explore and interact with the information. The two guiding principles are:

All the information about a patient needs to be available on a single page. The user does not lose any information and can scroll up and down to get an first overview. Hyperlinks are created to provide an easy way to move from section to section without losing the clinical context. This page is organized similarly to how a paper-based patient file is organized.

All the content of a patient’s medical history is indexed and represented graphically. A 3D model of the human body is used to highlight the relevant diseases, medications and procedures. The user can click on the virtual body to be guided to the relevant sections of the patient’s history.

  • Visual and intuitive interaction with healthcare data using a model of the human anatomy
  • Fast and comprehensive overview of entire medical histories
  • Better patient-doctor interaction

This approach has the benefit of bringing all the existing information to the user and to ease the navigation by representing key healthcare concepts on the body.

Clinicians can therefore see the background of a patient’s case and can dive into a medical history without looing control of the clinical context. Patients can understand their own medical history and relate it to their anatomy without being literate in medicine.

Example: Pilot project at Thy-Mors

Dr. Hardy Christoffersen, chief surgeon of the orthopedic department at the Thy-Mors hospital in Denmark, needed easy access to the patient’s medical history before and during patient examination.

The tool was used in front of patients who could share with Dr. Christoffersen the content of their medical records. A set of test clinicians also used the system, saving up to two-thirds of their time when accessing the medical history of patients.

Benefits of the visual patient record solution for Thy Mors:

  • Improved patient-doctor communication
  • Faster access to information
  • Improved control over data quality for diagnosis, procedures and medications.
